On February 9 at Skydive Sebastian in Florida, 26 jumpers set the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale Women’s World Record for Largest Two-Point Head-Down Formation Skydive. Red Bull sponsored the event and announced the achievement of the record on March 8, International Women’s Day. Red Bull Air Force member Amy Chmelecki organized the record jump, which was held as a part of the Women’s Sport Summit, a gathering designed to address pressing issues facing women in all types of sport.

It took the group only one attempt to achieve the record. Chmelecki remarked, “To get this record on the first jump was amazing and rare. It usually takes more practice.” She added, “This is something that I’ve been dreaming about for a long time. There are so few women in skydiving that when you’re able to get us all together for something like this, it’s inspiring.”

The record-setting jumpers are Catriona Adam, Carlye Bartolomeo, Chazi Blacksher, Amberly Brown, Melissa Burns, Amy Chmelecki, Ali Criss, Sara Curtis, Ashley Goldstein, Laura Golly, Bonnie Grant, Katie Hansen, Sharon Har-Noy Pilcher, Donagene Jones, Nancy Koreen, Melissa Lowe, Jazmyne Martinez, Lisa Mazzetta, Rose Moeser, Natalie Pitts, Erin Ptaschinski, Paula Victoria Rodriguez Habeica, Samantha Smith, Stephanie Strange, Jessie Thompson and Laura Wagner.

In addition to the world record, the summit also gave women a forum to discuss the triumphs and challenges in sports where attention, participation and compensation are so often dominated by men. On hand to share their thoughts were USA Soccer goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris; former pro skier and President of the Women’s Sports Foundation Grete Eliassen; and 19-year-old pro wakeboarder Meagan Ethell, who was blown away by the teamwork it took to pull off the world record.

“To have all of these women come together and accomplish something that big is a really cool opportunity for them,” Ethell said after watching the group land.
