On March 21, Parachute Industry Association President Roberto Montañez issued a recommendation for the parachute industry to conduct a safety stand-down for jumps above 17,999 feet mean sea level. PIA—which is not an investigatory or regulatory body—issued this high-altitude stand-down in order to give the PIA Technical Committee the ability to produce a best-practices document that will “provide a framework that will increase the safety of the activity and lower the rate of injuries and fatalities in the future.”
