Trio Pedals Across Virginia for Skydiving Safety Foundation

On May 28, three USPA Members—Executive Director Albert Berchtold, D-27832; Scott Macario, D-22773; and Michael Savonarola, D-39174—rolled into Damascus, Virginia, after riding their bikes for 8 days across the state. The trio braved rain storms, 90-plus degree days, being chased by loose dogs, looong uphill climbs and a couple of popped tires during their more than 500-mile ride.

Last year, Berchtold made a similar trek across Virginia to raise money for and awareness of the U.S. Parachute Team Trust Fund. Inspired by his success, Macario and Savonarola decided to join him for this year’s ride, which benefitted the U.S. Skydiving Safety Foundation. The SSF provides supplemental funding for programs conducted by the USPA Safety and Training Department. This year’s ride raised more than $10,000 in pledges, which will go a long way in helping USPA increase the safety of the sport. Jumpers who would like to help support this initiative (but don’t wish to pedal for more than 500 miles) can simply visit uspa.org/donate to give.

At the end of the race—the Little Red Caboose in Damascus, Virginia—the riders still have enough energy to lift their bikes over their heads in celebration.
